The brim is wide enough to shade the shoulders, not just the face: 10 cm all round, with a slight downward curve at the front and back. The braid is paper straw - a twisted paper yarn - which is lighter and more even than natural straw and does not splinter. Inside is a cotton sweatband and an adjustable chin cord you can tuck away.
Paper straw is not for rain. A shower will spot it and a soaking will soften the brim permanently. It also does not pack: this hat travels on your head or in a hatbox, and the brim will take a dent if it is sat on.
